The Best Book Is a Choice Only You Can Make: Tips for Finding Your Perfect Read

Hello, I’m Kyo.

What book are you reading this autumn?

Have you ever struggled with knowing what to read, or bought a recommended book only to have it sit on your shelf forever?

There are so many great books out there, but the “best” one for you is not something someone else can decide. It’s a book only you can find at this very moment in your life.

In this blog post, I’ll share some tips for discovering your own special book.

The Best Book Is a Choice Only You Can Make

When you go to a bookstore, you’ll see shelves lined with “bestsellers” and “so-and-so’s recommendations.” While you can certainly gain valuable insights from these, a book someone else loves won’t necessarily resonate with you.

This is because the book you truly need changes with your current problems, interests, and life situation.

The purpose of reading isn’t just to accumulate information.

  • What knowledge are you missing right now?
  • What are you currently struggling with?
  • What do you genuinely find fun?

It’s most important to be honest with yourself and follow the curiosity that comes from within.

You Don’t Have to Be a Perfect Reader

Do you feel like you have to finish every book you start? Does that make reading feel like a chore?

The goal of reading isn’t to finish the book, but to find the essential information you need.

Whether it’s a physical book or an e-book, how you read is completely up to you.

  • Physical Books: Read only the chapters that interest you or highlight just the parts that are useful.
  • E-books: Use the search function to quickly find the information you need.

It’s okay to not finish every book. A half-read book isn’t a failure. By taking only what you need, you can lower the barrier to reading and make it a much more enjoyable experience.

Tips for When You Don’t Know What to Read

What if you don’t even know what you’re interested in? If that’s the case, try a different approach.

  • Read a book recommended by someone you admire: Reading a book recommended by a person you respect or a celebrity you like can be a great starting point. It can give you a window into their values and way of thinking, which might spark a new interest for you.
  • Find books to help you become your ideal self: Think about the kind of person you want to be, and then look for books that will help you gain the knowledge and skills to get there. Asking yourself, “What would my ideal self read?” can help you find your next book.

Conclusion

Reading isn’t about following recommendations; it’s about looking inward and having a conversation with yourself.

I used to only read what others told me to read. But once I started picking up only the books that genuinely interested me, reading became so much more fun.

What’s the next book you’ll be picking up?
